Support
The COVID-19 pandemic is having significant impacts on people’s economic, social and mental wellbeing. We are all in this together, but this crisis is affecting us all differently. While many in the community are increasing social contact with the easing of restrictions, there are also many people who will continue to isolate to protect their health.
So, while there may be a sense that things are slowly returning to "normal" this is not the case for many of our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues. By keeping an eye out, checking in and respecting the choices of our friends and neighbours who are self-isolating, we can make sure everyone is part of building and maintaining the connections in our communities.
It’s now more important than ever that we reach out to the people around us.
By doing your bit to support people in your neighbourhood, you’ll help to rekindle neighbourly spirit, reduce loneliness and isolation and even prevent illnesses such as depression.

Ways to Give Help

In Person (Social Distancing)
If you heading to the shops, why not ask if your neighbour requires anything while you are there.
It can be especially helpful to an elderly or sick neighbour who may need something but feels a bit awkward asking you for help.
On your way back, you can leave their shopping on the doorstep. You may be the only person they have to rely on.
Over the Phone
Nowadays nearly everyone has a mobile phone so it is so simple to keep in touch with your friends and neighbours with a simple text or a phone call, just asking
"How are you today?"
"Do you need any messages?"
"Would you like to "meet on Cam?"
Just having someone contact them can be all that's needed to brighten up their day.
Online
With more people being computer literate these days, and because they may be in lockdown at the moment, why not send them an email to see how they are managing and if they are well. You could even arrange for a few friends or neighbours to set up a video link either using Skype or Zoom if its more than one friend.
Its a simple way to keep social distancing but still you are able to see them.
Community Initiatives

Check on Your Elderly Neighbours
It’s easy to forget about the importance of checking in on someone who is elderly or has been ill recently but it’s incredibly important to do so particularly at certain times of the year such as Winter, Christmas, special occasions and when the weather is bad. Loneliness is a real problem for the elderly. If it’s been a few days or more since you’ve popped around to see how a friend or elderly neighbours are, try and make the time to do it today. You may well be the only person they speak to today, and that will really brighten their day. It’s also important to check how they are in case of a fall or other health problem that may have gone unnoticed if they have been alone for a number of days. Sharing your time like this is a wonderful way of spreading cheer and a great gift to give all year round. It not only makes that person feel loved and cared for, but it’ll also makes you feel good seeing the smile you put on that elderly persons face.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with building the community compost heap. Home composting is the most environmentally-friendly way of dealing with certain kitchen and garden waste, plus it produces compost that can be used as an excellent soil improver. To find out what is compostable and how to use a compost heap.......

Septic Tank System
Living in a rural area and our homes are not connected to the mains drainage, we have to use the septic tank systems on Riverview Country Park. Their purpose is to treat the waste water from your properties and adjoining neighbours properties. It's up to you - and your neighbours, to make sure it works efficiently by not allowing certain items to block the septic tanks, examples of which are .......
disposable diapers, wet wipes, sanitary products, condoms, cotton buds, paper towels, kitchen fat oil or grease, food scraps, pet food, paint, solvents, cigarette butts, to name a but a few.
The Park Management have the responsibility for the regular emptying and maintenance of the septic tanks, ensuring they are working properly, however we must do our part by not allowing the above items to enter the system. More information .......
